How to Get Referrals

Clients that are referred are more likely to buy sooner than people acquired through paid advertising.  Not only that, they will tend to spend more,  with less effort on your part, leaving you more time to focus on business.

There are several ways you can get more referrals:

  • There are groups such as BNI, where many different business people gather to give each other referrals, only one person from any given business is allowed in each group, eliminating competition.
  • Join your local Chamber of Commerce, they have frequent networking events, and you can usually use their member list.
  • The most effective way to get referrals is to ask!

Simply ask for a referral and tell you client why you are asking for it.  Let them know that you value their input and will not abuse the referrals.  When you contact or send letters out to these people, let your client have some editorial control over content.  Nobody wants to put a friend or family member in an awkward position.

Let your clients know you are trying to keep prices low, and the best way to do that is to have more clients.  You don’t have to be uncomfortable or nervous asking for referrals.  Remind them how good a product or service you provide, and that you are available if they have any questions.

By doing this, you actually have your client wanting to refer you because you have provided them with great value; they want to only refer valuable things as well as people.  That quite frankly makes them look smarter because they “found” you first, and they are doing somebody a favor by referring you.

Most importantly, referred clients are more likely to give even more referrals, which means your business will continue to grow over time.

Today, we are all busy; we not only invite, but rely on, word-of-mouth and referrals.  Most of us simply don’t want to spend the time to research, and find new products and services for ourselves.

My advice: Get comfortable asking for referrals, make it a mindset for your business, appreciate the win-win benefits for both clients and you the business owner.   Once you feel comfortable asking for referrals, you’ll soon find yourself getting referrals more often, without even asking.

Remember, you do have to provide a quality product/service at a good value.  You don’t have to be the cheapest, people look for the value, and you are a big part of the equation.  Be honest, provide good value, and people will consistently come to you.

Promote yourself as a valuable asset.  You are your business

Attrition

One of the biggest challenges in Network Marketing is the attrition factor. Attrition means that people quit the business too soon, not giving themselves and their business a chance to thrive and take root.
Attrition is generally not caused by the Network Marketing companies themselves, but by unrealistic expectations by the distributors. New recruits are often told that they can make huge sums of money, practically overnight, usually with minimal work.
The problem is that most people lose interest after a short while because they are not making as much money as they would like. They don’t have a steady supply of prospects and customers, and they’re not signing up new distributors or customers.
That’s a pretty uneasy feeling if you’re trying to build a long-term residual income with your Network Marketing Company. You may have to “replace” good people in your organization.
We as leaders are doing a disservice to not only our new partners but to ourselves if we use “pie in the sky” numbers while recruiting. Yes, there are times when those numbers are good to use but you may be setting up false expectations.
In my opinion, the short term gain is not worth the chance of losing a long term partner and the related residual income. By telling your potential new partners they can grow a reasonable income over time, of say $15,000 per month. And that may take time to work at. You are telling them it is indeed hard work, and it is worth it.
Most people can not wrap themselves around the thought of making 6 figures a month, so if they make only a 5 figure income, in their mind they might have failed, and that is tragic.
I always look for the new partner to make a long term commitment, not only to the company, but more importantly themselves. Four months minimum, preferably one – two years.
Being upfront is important, be honest, have integrity. Look for the long term, not only for yourself, but every one of your partners. When you do this you will see the attrition rate decrease and income increase.

Make friends to make friends

If you try to make friends with people just to get their business, you will end up with little of both.  I have many friends that do business with me, I also have many that don’t, but they all know what business I am in.

I do tell everybody what I’m up to, what products, services and so on that I offer, that’s just good business.  However I don’t try to recruit them.  Friends share with each other When they ask questions they express interest.  I will then give them the info they are interested in, perhaps offer to show them my opportunity.  But at their pace.

Do not try to ‘fire hose’ your friends.
Friends are too valuable.
If they have interest they will let you know.

Keep it Simple - Don’t Over analyze. I have found that it is easy to spend too much time thinking about what to do.  ‘Just do something’.

A mentor of mine told me to use A - C - A - A

Action Take action, do something

Critique Look at the results.  Preferably with sponsor / mentor

Adjust Make small adjustments, based on desired results.

Action Take action again.  With these small adjustments.

This is simple, should be done frequently, only spend a few minutes on the critique, and don’t change too quickly.

Technology vs People Skills Having technological skills are important, no doubt.  With sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Ning and dozens more, technology is easier to handle.  However having people skills is immensely important, and often overlooked.  You must develop leadership, and relationships to build a large, solid team.

Every No leads you closer to a Yes

  • There is no such thing as a bad prospecting call.  Every ‘no’ leads you closer to a ‘yes’ and every call will help you improve your communication skills.
  • Fear of loss is a greater motivator than opportunity for gain.  Tell your prospects that before they can join your program they will have to meet certain requirements.
  • Never let failure go to waste, if you learn anything, it is not a failure!
  • We get what we expect, not what we hope for.  Focus on good expectations.
  • If your prospect does not have genuine interest in what you have to say, either create interest or just end the presentation.   By taking away the opportunity to listen you may spur interest that way.
  • Share your sales and recruiting experiences with others who may benefit by your success.  It will train
them and remind you what you did right.
  • Never let an unsuccessful person sell you on his system for doing things.  This being said, inexperienced doesn’t necessarily equal unsuccessful.

Balance firmness and fun in your organization

When you become good leader, you will learn how to balance firmness and fun in your organization. You need to be able to tell people to go look up info themselves if is readily available to them. You need to build accountability in your group, not hand-hold for the simple matters. You also must have some fun, contests, promotions….having some fun can be a good motivator.

If you are planning on being a leader or achieving greatness, be prepared to have your butt kicked a little bit. There will always be some people that don’t want you to succeed, they like to play “king of the hill’ and want the attention themselves, or ‘anchors aweigh’ where they try to reach up and pull you down.

Don’t get down about this. It happens. Personally, if someone does well, that is great.
What can I learn from them, and share to help out others.

Use various form of communication, an occasional phone call to build a relationship is far more effective than just e-mailing all the time. Send something by snailmail, when you can hold something in your hand, you are more likely to remember it. How about Skype or instant messaging?
Mix it up, any one form of media can become boring, thus less effective.

Momentum

Your focus should always be primarily on your strengths and advantages you offer, rather than your weaknesses and disadvantages. When you do this you will in general become stronger.

Always be prepared to record a good idea, you never know when you are going to have a good idea. Always have a notebook to write in, or while you’re driving use a digital recorder. You will not remember it if you don’t take notes.

The only difference between a good presentation and a great one is the good presentation has a strong close. However, in the great presentation the prospect closes themselves.

Momentum starts with one tiny step, then another. Don’t try to do the complicated big things, until you know the basics. You’ve got to learn to walk before running. By trying higher level activities to soon you will increase the chance of failure. Build up your knowledge and confidence.

Opportunity

When talking with prospects, avoid using the word “opportunity”, it has become overused, an alternative might be program, business model, or business proposal.

Remember, prospecting should be a never-ending process. It must be done every day, either by you and or the people in your group. Make it a natural part of your day, it will become easier and automatic.

When a prospect says something positive about your products or your company, ask them to explain why by asking, “Why do you say that?” Then be quiet and listen while the prospect sells themselves on your products and or your business.

Always, Promote Yourself. You are your CEO!
