Facebook Email

Is facebook going to announce email services today?

If sources are correct, Facebook is on the edge of announcing a web-based email client at their event in San Francisco today.

Back in February, there were reports on Facebook’s reworked messaging client, given the rather understated title of Project Titan. Facebook is completely rewriting its messaging product and is preparing to launch a fully featured webmail product in its place.

All indications are that the product will be unveiled at today’s by-invitation-only press event.

What this all means, should you choose to participate, is that you’ll get your own @facebook.com email address, probably the same as your personalized Facebook URL, with full POP/IMAP support, meaning you can manage and use your email account without actually logging into Facebook.

Facebook will no doubt bring its own twist to its email client. It knows everything about you. Facebook knows who you’re friends with, who you went to school with and who you work with. Facebook’s email product would be light years more useful than Gmail or any of the other web-based email clients if all that knowledge is integrated into the product. Where Facebook might help is that it inherently understands who is most important in your life, which goes a long way to knowing which emails may be the most important. Maybe it will rank emails from your spouse and best friends highly, and emails from your old school mates lower.

Facebook states that their email will be spam-free. Or at least be a lot tougher to set up a spam account.

I can’t picture this new email system would replace your primary email, but I can see it being used for your social networking activities.

With cell phones having Facebook apps and the current system being able to notify you of facebook emails now, I am not sure what the advantage of this may be.

What are your thoughts?

  1. It is so good! I think it can help me.

  2. thank you very much! It is useful for me!

  3. Email service from facebook? perfect. I’ve been crying out for this for months, one place to have all your emails without having multiple windows open. I can have one for my work and all my benzo fury, nrg1 research etc…one for the family, and one for mrs smith! Sorted :)

  4. I’m interested to see how this will work. I suspect some users, like me, are already set up in gmail or Outlook or whatever and will resist all of Facebook’s efforts to bring their email “in-house.” Others who maybe aren’t so entrenched in their various systems may be more likely to just let Facebook have everything.

  5. That email issue is what I think is probably the lamest thing about any social network.I would think people would want to actually receive their email in their normal inbox even more than they want some open standard for moving around the services. I just rarely hear about it, so nice to see here.

  6. Facebook is really a big help to promote business. thanks for sharing :)

  7. I hope Facebook can guarantee that their email would be spam free. This is a great feature if this plan will become a reality.

  8. I hope they will be able to put this plan in action as soon as possible. I like also your idea of ranking the emails according to importance. It saves people more time in looking up for the most important ones to reply first. But the biggest problem for this one is the connection of the email function to the facebook account. This really is a little bit risky. Maybe some people will also think that using it will be a breach in their privacy with regards to their private mails. Hacking is also a very big risk for every big projects by big companies everytime. I hope they can really filter the spams on the emails if ever that this project will be launched soon. I am looking forward for this one. ;)

  9. The functions of Facebook appear to be ever growing and it becomes increasingly interactive. I expect that Facebook may become so large that it will be used like a search engine and become a competitor to Google. Good read, thanks!

  10. History of face book starts from a small room among friends and now it’s the most leading social networking site with page rank of 10 in google . if face is coming with email service then shuerly it will give big competition to google and yahoo..

  11. Cant wait for Facebook email I think its going to be awesome

  12. Right now Facebook doesn’t have the security SSL in place to maintain a good e-mail offering.
